Outreach Programs

Sustainable Forests Education Cooperative (SFEC)

The SFEC is a UMN-based cooperative including 48 public agencies, private companies, and private agencies, organizations, tribal nations, and companies. SFEC events connect resource managers with researchers to advance solutions to complex resource challenges. Programs include short courses, field days, workshops, symposia, and online instruction.

  • Offerings like our Great Lakes Silviculture Library foster innovation and experimentation among resource managers, accelerating innovation in helping our forests adapt to changing climate, market, and ecological conditions.

Minnesota Tree Improvement Cooperative (MTIC)

The MTIC was established in 1981 and has several members representing state departments, counties, tribal nations, and private industry. The cooperative establishes and maintains seed orchards that provide members with a genetically diverse, locally adapted, and improved seed supply for their reforestation efforts.

National Advanced Silviculture Training (NASP)

The NASP is a five-module certification program available to the USDA Forest Service. The program includes five courses for USDA Forest Service silviculturists. The Cloquet Forestry Center hosts two of these modules.

UMN Forest and Natural Resource Management Field Sessions

These field sessions offer students hands-on experiences to learn field techniques.

Conservation Education Days

Conservation Education Days brings all Carlton County 5th graders to the CFC to experience field-based learning about their environment.

Forestry Adventure Days

The goal of Forestry Adventure Days is to use the outdoors classroom to excite kids in the fields of science and forestry using hands on learning. It is offered twice annually in the Spring and Summer.

CFC Open House

This annual event welcomes the general public to the CFC to learn more about our forests and research and engage with our staff. Our 2024 Open House will be held on Wednesday, August 21 from 4:30-8:00pm.

Forest Run/Walk

Our annual fun run/walk is free and open to participants of all ages and fitness levels. Participants are encouraged to enjoy the fall colors on a 3.1 mile route along our unpaved forest roads. Our 2024 5K is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1 at 5:30pm. More information to come.

The CFC forest is also open year-round to public recreation that does not conflict with research activities. Please review our recreation and gathering guidelines before your visit.

Forest Tours

We also host forest tours for students, natural resource management professionals, and the general public that are tailored to each group’s particular interests. To request a forest tour, contact Kyle Gill.
