BWCA fire researchers featured in new Gunflint Trail exhibit at Chik-Wauk

May 28, 2021

Tree-ring fire history research by Lane Johnson, Research Forester with the UMN Cloquet Forestry Center, and his colleagues is featured in a new interpretive exhibit at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center on the Gunflint Trail, outside of Grand Marais, MN. The exhibit highlights new fire records developed from red pine tree rings for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and the importance of these fire records for understanding the fire ecology of the region. Joe Friedrichs with WTIP North Shore Community Radio spoke with Lane and one of his colleagues, Professor Evan Larson with University of Wisconsin-Platteville, to highlight the fire ecology exhibit and the re-opening of Chik-Wauk Museum for the 2021 season.
