Continuing volunteer opportunities:

Tree seed collection
Tree Trust has developed a Tree Trunk of ready-to-use lessons, materials and resources about forests and natural resources that teachers can incorporate into various school subjects and grade levels. The lessons emphasize hands-on learning, so the Trunk is filled with items to see and touch. One lesson is called “Seeds and the Life Cycle of Trees.” Students learn how seeds travel and which seeds are produced by various trees.

This is where I could use your help: COLLECTING THE SEEDS!! Each school we work with (usually eight schools a year) will receive packets of 20-30 of each seed.

Kentucky Coffeetree – Gymnocladus dioica
Green Ash – Fraxinus pennsylvanica
American Basswood – Tilia americana
Jack Pine – Pinus banksiana
Red Pine – Pinus resinosa
American Elm – Ulmus Americana
White Cedar – Thuja occidentalis
Ironwood – Ostrya virginiana
Box Elder – Acer negundo
Silver Maple – Acer saccharinum
Eastern Cottonwood – Populus deltoides
White Spruce – Picea glauca
Paper Birch – Betula papyrifera
Yellow Birch – Betula alleghaniensis
Catalpa – Catalpa speciosa

If this sounds like a project you’d like to help with, please:

- collect any of the seeds mentioned
- put them in a zip lock bag
- mail them to: Barb Spears, Tree Trust, 2350 Wycliff Street, Suite 200, St. Paul, MN 55114
- If you have questions, contact Kirsten Andenas, 651-644-5800.

Share photos
Anytime – From home or in the woods, send us pictures that can be used for a calendar or in the newsletter as needed. Woods shots are nice, but the best photos will have you or your family members in them, working or having fun in the woods. Contact: Angie Gupta, 888-241-4536.

School Forests
Anytime during the school year – Volunteer at a local school forest. Woodland Advisors can either help out in the classroom or go for walks in the woods with teachers.
