Equine Forestry Workshop and Demonstration at Arcola Mills
What's old is new - equine forestry is eco-friendly! Learn more about the latest method of managing your woodlot at Arcola Mills, where draft horses will help remove diseased oak trees, protecting the fragile woodland environment. The trees will be milled on site for future use at Arcola Mills by Cedar River Horse Logging. The Saturday workshop runs all day, and includes indoor presentation, lumberjack lunch, and outdoor demonstration of logging and milling. A family friendly demonstration will be held on Sunday, March 2nd, 1-4pm. Following a 160 year tradition of lumbering at Arcola Mills, visitors will experience a part of history revived for new reasons. Demonstrations of horse logging, video of early logging, refreshments and a collection of antique lumbering and woodworking tools will be on display both days.

Field Demonstration: Crosscut Saw vs. Cut-to-Length Harvester
Enjoy a field demonstration that will include a friendly competition between a historic, low tech, cross cut saw and a sophisticated, ‘high-tech’, cut-to-length harvesting system. A team of horses will skid logs out of the woods while nearby an efficient forwarder system will transport wood products to the road. It will be an interesting contrast in harvesting systems and technology. Just as important are the lessons of stewardship. Learn why the forest is being harvested and plans to improve the resource.

Growing and Tending Hybrid Poplar **CLASS CANCELLED**
Planting hybrid poplar for pulp and paper, bioenergy and environmental protection is becoming popular in Minnesota. This class will cover some of the basics of growing, tending and managing hybrid poplar from site preparation / establishment to maintenance of plantings. This class is designed for landowners and others professionals who wish to learn more about cultural practices of growing hybrid poplar. We'll spend 90 minutes on economics and marketing of hybrid poplars. We'll also discuss landowner assistance and cost share programs including the "Improved Agroforestry Advance Loan Fund with Energy Incentives" loan program, EQIP, Continuous CRP Buffer Strips, WHIP, DNR forestry, etc. This class will also involve a tour to a hybrid poplar plantation. Emerald Ash Borer First Detector Training
The University of Minnesota, DNR, and Minnesota Department of Agriculture will be holding EAB First Detector training sessions throughout the state this spring. One-day training sessions will include information on the Federal First Detector Program, the importance of ash in Minnesota, and updates on the spread of emerald ash borer. We will also discover how to distinquish EAB and its signs and symptoms from look-alikes, tips on what homeowners and woodlot owners can do about EAB now, how to handle reports of EAB, and what will happen when EAB is found in Minnesota. The role of EAB First Detectors is to serve as a public contact for EAB information and to help resolve reports of EAB infestations in Minnesota. Swamp Cedar
Northern White Cedar is an ancient tree, called "geezhig" by Ojibwa
because of it’s usefulness to their society, it’s Latin name "arborvitae" meaning the tree of life indicates its significance. Northern White Cedar grows in critical parts of forest ecosystems: swamps, fens, calcium-rich
uplands, lining lakeshores and rivers. Northern White Cedar
has distinctive qualities from its’ fragrant foliage, rot resistant
wood, fibrous bark and spreading root system. This session will
explore the unique properties of Northern White Cedar, its management
and usefulness. This session will offer classroom discussion and an opportunity to
work with cedar bark and splints.

How to Use a GPS Receiver
This GPS workshop is for those who are interested in advancing their skills in the use of GPS units. Participants who have not and have taken the Basic GPS class are encouraged to attend, as this class will integrate the content of the Basic GPS and Intermediate GPS curricula using Garmin Map76 CSX units. This class will provide overview of the basic concepts of GPS including becoming familiar with the GPS screens, marking waypoints, saving tracks as well as advanced use of GPS such as creating and navigating routes and changing coordinate systems and map datums. Garmin GPS Map76 CSX units will be provided for use during the workshop. This is a hands-on classroom and field workshop so dress for the weather.

Timber Stand Improvement
Timber Stand Improvement includes a variety of strategies to make the best of your woodland better. Despite the name, TSI can be used to improve wildlife habitat, grow big trees faster, or many things other than improving timber quality. This workshop, offered in partnership with the Minnesota Logger Education Program, will cover four different approaches to TSI in Minnesota. The workshop includes classroom presentations, field site visits, two hands-on field exercises where small groups design their own TSI prescriptions, and a classroom exercise on economic and operational considerations.

Planting Trees and Releasing Seedlings in your Woods
There are few activities more rewarding than standing under a towering tree that you planted years ago. There’s no better time to start the process than now! Learn the basics of successful tree planting and maintenance. Many of the most important steps occur after the trees are in the ground. Options for animal and weed control will also be presented. Participants in this class can register for a drawing of up to 50 free spruce and pine seedlings. The Flute Reed Partnership has 500 trees to give away.

NE Community Forest Workshop
The NE Community Forest Workshop is a one day event filled with the topics of tree varieties that survive in NE Minnesota, exotic insects that are threatening NE woods, pests of community trees that are thriving after drought conditions, and diagnosing tree problems underground. Diagnosing Tree Problems Underground will occur at the UMD campus. Attendees will have the opportunity to use a supersonic soil removal system to investigate root problems. New Tree Inspector Certification Workshop
Certified Tree Inspectors are trained to identify common landscape trees, firewood and manage Dutch elm disease and oak wilt. This one day workshop will teach you what you need to know to actively participate in disease tree programs and communicate management efforts with members of the community. Minnesota Forestry Association Spring Field Days
The Minnesota Forestry Association would like to invite you to this year's Spring Field Days. We will meet at Cabela's on Friday and board buses to get out to the field through Sauber Woods, as well as Ron Maas Woods for presentations on MN Land Trust Easements, forest and prairie restoration, hardwoods management, and tips on pruning and thinning. Friday evening includes MFA's annual meeting, banquet, silent auction, and program with Emily Hutchins, DNR Private Lands Wildlife Manager. Saturday's events start out early with a Wildflower Nature Hike at Kaplan Woods, and continue through the morning with discussions and various presenters on intergenerational land transfer planning. Tree and Shrub Identification **Rescheduled from May 6**
Do you know what trees and shrubs are growing in your woodland or home landscape? Are they native, marketable or invasive? Being able to have a general understanding of tree and shrub identification is important to better manage these plant species on your property. Differences in tree species, preferred soils, habitat types and growing conditions will be discussed. We will review trees and shrubs in the area plus a number of species that we should be planting to help diversify plants in our home landscapes. The class will begin in the school but we will also be walking through the school’s environmental learning area for a hands-on tree and shrub identification tour, so come dressed for the weather and walking. ** Pre-Registration is Required **
