This is and excellent class landowners doing work around the house or farm. This class will also prove equally as valuable for the professional using a saw everyday. Come and learn about saw selection, chain function and maintenance. Learn how to prevent kickback, and which personal protective equipment and safety devices are needed to make the use of your chainsaw safe and effective. Outdoor portion of the class will also include a demonstration of modern felling, limbing and bucking techniques, as well as discussion of tree hazards. Winter Plant ID and Snowshoe Tour
Identifying trees and shrubs in the winter can be tough but with a few tips and tricks and a quality tree ID book this is possible. Come and travel through the woods of Voyageurs National Park on snowshoes and learn how to identify trees and shrubs by buds, bark, form, and other methods that can help you figure out what tree that is.
Class will meet at the Rainy Lake Visitors Center, where we will discuss techniques that can be used to identify winter plants. Then we will put on our snowshoes and head out to the woods to identify some trees and shrubs, while at the same time enjoying the beauty of the winter woods. Snowshoes will be available at the visitor center, and a tree id book will be available for purchase.

Intermediate GPS ** CLASS CANCELLED**
This intermediate GPS workshop is designed for those who have taken the Introduction to GPS course. Content includes a brief review of the key concepts from the introductory course; setting up tracks; activating and navigating a route; managing waypoints, tracks and routes; and transferring maps into the GPS receiver. Garmin GPS Map76 units will be provided for use during the workshop. This will be a hands-on classroom and field workshop, so please dress for the weather.

Measuring and Reading Your Forest

Growing Pine for Products
At the turn of the century, Minnesota's official state tree, Norway
Pine, (Pinus resinosa) covered one-third of the forest through the Great
Lakes. Today, Minnesota claims 540,200 acres of Norway Pine. This
valuable upland conifer is a long-lived tree species that can produce a
variety of products throughout it's lifetime including pulpwood, fence
posts, lumber, cabin logs and sawtimber.
To learn how to manage Norway Pine to help these forests achieve their
potential, the Itasca Count Private Woodland Committee will be hosting a
field tour. The tour begins at the Itasca Greenhouse to learn how
seedlings are carefully grown and then participants will travel by bus
to stops through the Grand Rapids area to learn how to care for
seedlings, to grow Christmas trees, to manage pole stands and high value
end products like sawtimber and cabin logs.

Tap into Spring with Birch Syrup
Each year folks across Alaska, Scandinavia, Europe and Russia collect
birch sap to create a variety of unique products including: a natural
health beverage, syrup used as a marinade, topping for pancakes,
delicious candy and more. The natural sugar that comes from birch is
fructose as opposed to sucrose found in maple.
Learn about local collection and processing experiences. This class
will be of interest to maple producers looking to extend their season
and those curious about this sticky business. It's "un-maple."

This intermediate GPS workshop is designed for those who have taken the Introduction to GPS course. Growing and Tending Hybrid Poplar
Planting hybrid poplar for pulp and paper, bioenergy and environmental protection is becoming popular in Minnesota. This class will cover some of the basics of growing, tending and managing hybrid poplar from site preparation/establishment to maintenance of plantings. This class is designed for landowners and others professionals who wish to learn more about cultural practices of growing hybrid poplar. We'll spend 90 minutes on economics and marketing of hybrid poplars. We’ll also discuss landowner assistance and cost share programs including the "Improved Agroforestry Advance Loan Fund with Energy Incentives" loan program, EQIP, Continuous CRP Buffer Strips, WHIP, DNR forestry, etc. This class will also involve a tour to a hybrid poplar plantation. Woodland Owners Biomass Field Days

Biomass is becoming a buzzword in Minnesota. Interest in the use of biomass for energy in Minnesota is increasing. Major sources of biomass include logging slash, products from pre-commercial forestry treatments, and brushland harvest. Oak Savanna Celebration and Forestry Fair
This day of family fun celebrates the grand opening of Oak Savanna Park in
Becker by offering many events including an early morning bird hike,
educational displays and information for landowners, a Raptor Center
program, and a prairie restoration and oxen plowing demonstration. For
woodland owners, Tim Carroll of Cedar River Horse Logging will spend the day
discussing woodland stewardship, demonstrating directional tree felling,
horse logging, and portable saw milling.

Family Forest Certification Workshop and Tour
Minnesota has more certified forestland than any other state in the nation. So what is forest certification? Does a certified forest look different? Is certification something I should be doing for my land? In May 2007, 13 landowners in Aitkin County joined a new program offered by the Aitkin SWCD and had their forests certified. At this workshop, we'll visit a certified forest and learn more about the benefits, costs, and process of forest certification. Special thanks to the MN Forest Stewardship Committee for supporting this event.

Forest Wildlife & Native Tree Identification
Do you want to see more wildlife diversity on your property? At the Forest
Wildlife class you'll learn from a local wildlife professional about how to attract
native wildlife to your property by managing a variety of plant and animal species. We' ll discuss basic habitat requirements and how to achieve them on your property. Knowing the tree species on your property is one of the first steps to good forest stewardship. Some species grow well on a given site, while others will not. Different species also have different potential timber and wildlife. At the Native Tree ID class you' ll learn how to identify some of the most important native trees and plants in your area. We'll also discuss the concept of native plant communities.

Buckthorn, Emerald Ash Borer, & Other Forest Invasives

At this session, you'll learn to see your forest through the eyes of a professional forester. You'll learn about some of the tools and techniques that foresters use to evaluate a forest stand, individual trees, and cut products. Field Trip to the Lost Forty
The Lost Forty, located in northern Itasca County, was the result of a surveying error in 1882 during the original land survey. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy fall colors and walk the trails through this unique forest with old growth pines that are 300-400 years old. We’ll convene at Dora Lake and travel five miles to this interesting site.

Biomass Energy Crops Field Tour
Biomass is becoming a buzzword in Minnesota. Short rotation woody crops such as hybrid poplars and willows are considered bio-energy crops and willows are currently being used in New York and Europe. This field tour will focus on the establishment, planting, maintenance and management of hybrid poplars and willow plantations. Specific topics for the field tour include the following: Performance evaluation of willow varieties from New York, Potentials of willow as a bio-energy crop in Minnesota, Growing hybrid poplars for energy, Silvicultural practices of hybrid poplars, Recent advances in hybrid poplar clone production. How to Use a GPS Receiver
Have you ever been lost on your own property? Have you tried to return to a favorite deer stand or fishing hole, only to be unable to find it? Global Positioning Systems, or GPS, can help you to navigate with confidence. If you have a new GPS unit or are thinking of buying one, this class may be for you. We'll start with the basics.
