Recreational Trail Design
This workshop offers private landowners the basic knowledge necessary to design, construct, and maintain sustainable trails for hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, off-highway motorcycling, and all terrain vehicles. At this class you will learn how to: determine trail uses, select the trail corridor, establish trail design standards, mark exact trail location, clear the trail, construct the tread, install structures to cross obstacles, sign the trail, and install facilities that support the trail. The class begins indoors and then moves outdoors to explore applications of principles on actual trails.

Nuts & Bolts of Timber Sales

Firewise Workshop
Wildfire Happens! Minnesota, especially areas with sandy soils and many conifers such as Sherburne County, is not immune to the effects of wildfire. Learn how to make your home or community safe from wildfire! During this workshop we'll identify homes and other structures that are fire-prone and discuss techniques that will help lessen the risks. The techniques will also help you improve the general health of trees and woodlands around your home and community.

Balsam Management and Holiday Wreath Production Tour
Please join us for this family event at Mickman Brothers wreath operation and garden center. We will learn about using balsam boughs in a variety of products and tour the production facility. We will also discuss proper balsam bough harvesting techniques and balsam management. Family and friends of all ages are welcome! Hot cider and refreshments provided. Pruning and Direct Seeding of Hardwoods
Learn why, how and when to prune trees and shrubs to promote proper growth and to prevent hazard trees that may cause property damage.  Participants will also learn about how to collect, prepare and plant hardwood seeds (oaks, hickory, etc.) in the fall.  There will be a hands-on pruning and seeding exercise outdoors so come prepared for the weather.

Minnesota's family forest owners selling timber may be able to take advantage of favorable capital gains treatment when selling timber. Learn what records to keep and how a stewardship plan could help show that you are managing your land for long term gain. Finally, learn about how you can receive a yearly check from the Minnesota Department of Revenue for agreeing to manage your land for forestry.

Nontimber Forest Products and Managing Your Woodland for Wildlife
You may attend one or both sessions. The morning session will cover Managing your Woodland for Wildlife and the afternoon session will be Non-timber Forest Products. NTFP: Learn about the non-timber products that you can harvest and sell from your forest. Examples include balsam boughs, birch bark, tree syrups, wild fruits and burls. Marketing of these products will also be discussed. Wildlife: Most landowners are interested in viewing wildlife on their property. This class will cover basic wildlife needs and how you can manage for them on your land. An emphasis will be placed on wildlife found along the North Shore of Lake Superior and how development pressures and natural changes in forest composition might affect wildlife.
