Forest Ecology and Management

What is forest ecology all about?

There are many reasons why understanding more about how forests work can benefit us as landowners and citizens. At the Cloquet Forestry Center and University of Minnesota Extension Service we're working to help Minnesotans learn what they need to know in order to be good stewards of all our forestland.

How are we doing this?

Fall view from the fire tower.Working with the Minnesota Forestry Association (MFA) and local Private Woodland Committees to offer "Walks-in-the-Woods", equipment demonstrations, full-day workshops, and other programs to landowners or interested citizens.

Working with MFA and other collaborators to offer the Woodland Advisor Program, a 45-hour program about forest ecology and management.

Promoting appropriate forms of cooperation in forest management and marketing of forest products among private woodlot owners.

Providing educational opportunities to youth through schools and the Center for 4-H Youth Development.

Contributing research and outreach work to the activities of the Minnesota Forest Resources Council (MFRC), including promoting implementation of the Voluntary Site-Level Forest Management Guidelines
